Question: What trends can you note? What would be the expected
trends for the rest of the year? How might you use this information? Click
on Show Answer for suggestions.
Sample Answer:
The number of book repairs performed has risen significantly over the
course of four months in the Main (more than double) and the Medical
(more than triple) libraries. There has been some small growth in the
number of repairs in the other libraries as well. If these trends continue,
the number of repairs needed in the Main and Medical libraries might
increase as much as eight to ten times over the course of the year.
However, the preservation department should investigate to ensure that
some unusual circumstances (such as increased efforts to identify damaged
books) have not affected the numbers. The statistics might be used to
determine budgeting and staffing levels for book repair for the next
year, and/or as an indicator that improvements in user education or
collection handling are needed in some of the university libraries.
